You are the boss of Your Thoughts – but is it that simple?

I often tell my clients, โ€œYou are the boss of your thoughts; your thoughts are not the boss of you.โ€ But if it were that simple, no one would struggle with self-doubt, overthinking, or negative self-talk. The truth is, while we can control our thoughts, it takes intention, practice, and a shift in mindset.

I remember a time when my thoughts felt like they were running the showโ€”spiraling from โ€œWhat if I fail?โ€ to โ€œIโ€™m not doing enoughโ€ to โ€œMaybe Iโ€™m just not meant for this.โ€ The more I entertained these thoughts, the more they shaped my emotions, actions, and confidence. Thatโ€™s when I had to remind myself: I have the power to choose what I allow to take root in my mind.

Taking Control of Your Thoughts in Three Steps
 1. Catch It โ€“ Awareness is the first step. Pay attention to the thoughts that pop up during your day. Are they empowering or limiting? If you wouldnโ€™t say it to a friend, why say it to yourself?
 2. Challenge It โ€“ Ask yourself: Is this thought true? Is it helpful? Does it align with who I want to be? Just because a thought appears doesnโ€™t mean it deserves a seat at the table.
 3. Change It โ€“ Replace negative or unhelpful thoughts with truth. Instead of โ€œIโ€™ll never get this right,โ€ try โ€œIโ€™m learning and improving every day.โ€ Instead of โ€œIโ€™m not good enough,โ€ remind yourself โ€œI bring value in my own unique way.โ€

The more you practice, the easier it gets. Over time, you retrain your brain to filter out thoughts that donโ€™t serve you and reinforce those that do.

So yes, you are the boss of your thoughtsโ€”but only if you actively step into that role. You wouldnโ€™t let an unqualified person run your business, so why let unfiltered, unhelpful thoughts run your life?
